- COMPUTER LABS
There are many ways to help get computers to schools in Guatemala:
. DONATE USED COMPUTERS, monitors, keybaords, mice, and printers. Hard drives are especially needed because companies have donated good CPU’s without hard drives.
. HELP PACK COMPUTERS and monitors in bubble wrap and corrugated boxes.
. ASK FRIENDS FOR USED COMPUTERS. Old computers are perfect for helping kids learn basic computer skills.
. DONATE FUNDS.
IT COSTS ABOUT $60 to pack and ship a computer system (tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse) from Ct to a warehouse in Guatemala).
- RECREATION PARK
Donate playground equipment. Small items, such as the swing seats can be economically shipped to Guatemala where we will make the swing support structure.
Donate funds to:
. Purchase or manufacture playground equipmenmt in Guatemala (swings, slides, forts, jungle gyms, etc.). Must be metal because wood is not feasable: it is too expensive.
. Purchase trees which school children will plant. The government may provide the trees.
. Bring water to irrigate trees and agricultural extension projects. We have estimates.
. Build picnic tables and barbeque pits.
. Pay day laborers to build latrines, build fences, clear the land, plant
flowers, provide drainage for the entrance road so it will survive the
rainy season. Laborers earn $5.50 per day.
. Pay $20 daily salary of engineer who comes every 15 days for two to
three days to supervise work. His expenses of room and board are extra, but minimal.
. Build a basketball court. We have estimates.
. Build a soccer field. We have estimates.
. Electricity will eventully be needed. We have estimates
. Build a small house for someone to keep an eye on the land. He may
need a minimal salary. This becomes more important as the site develops.
. Hire an agronomist to supervise agricultural extension projects (coffee, fruit trees, trees for erosion control, gardens). The government may provide an agronomist once the land is more developed.
MEDICAL PROJECTS
1. Ask your doctor for medial equipment or medications. Pharmaceutical companies give doctors samples that they may be willing to donate.
2. Clean out you medicine cabinet and donate what you don’t need. The medicines may not have actually expired. Chuck Hibben, pharmacist, and co-owner of Griebs pharmacy in Darien Ct will determine if any out-dated medicines or OTC medications can still be safely used.
Don and Jinny Miller from Darien cleaned out their medicine cabinet and the medicines were given to the Maryknoll hospital in Jacaltenango, Huehuetenango. Dr. Eric Neibart in New York City donated a stethoscope and medicines. Dr. Rhett Drugge from Stamford donated medicines.
HELP FUND PRIMARY SECONDARY AND UNIVERSITY LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS
1. Help a student through higher education through the Quaker Scholarship/Loan Program, about $1000 per year for four to six years. Or make a donation to the Quakers who will combine it with other donations.
2. Help a primary school student through Friends of Guatemala (returned Peace Corps Volunteers), about $60 per year. Smaller donations will be combined.
