Building School

CFG IS BUILDING THIS TEACHERS HIGH SCHOOL IN MEMORY OF OUR DECEASED FIELD DIRECTOR RAFAEL RANDAL JUAREZ, DESIGNED BY PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEER AND ARCHITECT JIM FANJOY site_front hi res
This high school is co-ed and primarily for bi-lingual Mayan students who want to be primary school teachers. The school teaches the Mayan tradition of pursuing community service after graduation, as opposed to a government school which prepares students to earn a living. Note the split level entrance from the second floor, and the strong Mayan motif, with the four wings representing the four cardinal points of the Mayan compas.

CFG has comitted to raising $28,000 to purchase cement, blocks and rebar. The community has provided the land, a tractor, skilled labor and their own fund raising. The students’ fathers are doing all the manual labor. This would be a $1 million project in the States, for just the structure with no finishings.

DOING SO MUCH WITH SO LITTLE

hacksaw_ghetto

Peace Corps Volunteer and architect for the projct Jim Fanjoy shows one of the homemade hack saws used to cut the rebar. Although there is electricity at the site, they have no power tools. We would like to raise funds for a circular saw for cutting wood, half inch power drill, a saw for cutting cement block, and a saw for cutting rebar.
